Why Take Pictures of Cats?

If entertainment is your goal, then turn off the TV, put down the GameBoy® and find your cat. The hunter inside your ordinary house cat can be triggered by the flick of a string or the rustle of a feather, causing feline acrobatics at there best can ensue. But, if you have never taken a close look at your cat, I mean a really close look, then you may just enjoy this collection of feline close up photographs. A close look at taste buds, eyes, fangs and faces brings with them amazing awareness and a sense of wonder.

Each close up shot of Cats has been captured using a Fuji Pro Grade Digital Camera, and a Nikkor Macro lens; or a Nikkor 28mm to 105mm zoom lens. In some cases the images have been cropped closer to define the subject by using editing software.

My Polydactyl Cat Photgraphs (My "extra toes" Feline)

I would never venture to call "Shanks" a mutant to her face, however when she is not in the room this is an applicable term. A Polydactyl Cat (also called hyperdactyly) is one that has extra toes on one or more of its paws. Found in the South West England and Wales, but most commonly found on the East Coast of the United States and as far North as Canada, the Polydactyl is a true mutation. A normal cat that has no mutation has 18 toes; five toes on each front paw and four toes on its rear paws. Our rescue cat, Shanks, is one of these cute and loving Extra Toed Cat creatures, having extra toes on each of her front feet.

These delightfully personable Polydactyl cats offer some outstanding hunting and climbing skills, far better than the usual agility of most house cats. In playing with Shanks, it is very apparent that her grabbing skills and capture swipes are extremely timely and accurate. With those big "Boxing Glove" Cat paws, it would seem she never misses her prey. She has the personality of a gentle, friendly, and loving tabby, but the wits and stealth of a tiger. She is wonderful to cuddle with and a joy to watch during playtime.

You will find here a few images of her unusual cat mutation up close personal.

A Polydactyl Cat is often referred to as:

  1. Boxing Cat
  2. Mitten Cat
  3. Thumb Cat
  4. Snowshoe Cat
  5. Cardi-Cat
  6. Double Pawed Cat
  7. Mitten-foot Cat
  8. Hemingway Cat

A Close Up Look at the Amazing Cat Tongue

Only a person who has never seen a cat tongue close up before would ask, "Why is a Cat Tongue so special?" When a cat graciously offers to clean or lick our skin, it is like having a rough textured piece of sandpaper pulled across the skin. Some people find it a pleasant enough gesture, while others find it truly an unwanted offering. If you could see a cats tongue really up close, you might fall into the latter category without a second thought!

It may surprise you to learn that humans have 9000 taste buds, and dogs have around 1700, while cats only have 479 on their tiny tongues. A cat is a strict carnivore, therefore these taste buds are designed to dial in on the meatier side of life, as they need amino acids only found in meat (Taurine in particular) to survive. A close look reveals that a Cats Tongue has these rows of spike-like features across the surface of the tongue, we call taste buds. But, up close, they are nothing like any taste bud I have ever viewed! When I say "spike-like" I mean curved hooks that taper from a broad base to a fine sharp appearing point, not unlike the claws you find on their paws. Personally, I found it a fascinating visual discovery, and I hope you do as well.

In this series of shots I try to get you as close as my cats would allow. The images can be a bit intense if you have not seen Pictures of a Cat Tongue this Close before.

What You Think Really Does Matter!

Have you ever seen a cat tongue this close before?

  • No. I never knew just how wild they look up close like this. Fascinating to say the least.
  • Yes. I have seen a cat tongue before, but these are some pretty revealing pictures!
  • Whatever, it's just a cat tongue.

Pictures of Cat Faces

I am thoroughly overjoyed when my cats locks eyes with me, only to share a gentle double-eyed slow motion blink. This is a wonderful friendly facial gesture a cat rarely gives that says, "I really love you." This facial expression is generally followed by a soft and short trilling feline vocalization. For me anyway, the facial expressions a cat makes can reveal all she has on her mind; the hunt, the prey, and even the calm moments of serenity she finds in the warm glow of a stream of light.

This series of Cat Pictures shares the faces of the cats I adore. Fuzzy, intense, mesmerizing, and just plain cute. For a dog lover like me, these cat faces bring a very wide K9 smile!

The Faces of CAPTIVE BIG CAT Pictures

No matter the size of a cat, they are avid hunters and are in constant search of prey, whether hungry or simply board. Cats are among the few creatures on earth that hunt for the simple pleasure of the chase and then the kill; humans also fall into this category. Big Cats have the power of Mother Nature built into their huge muscles, claws, and sharp destructive fangs. They are the most perfect killing machine found on soil. Look into a Big Cats eyes and you can feel the danger they present. At times, their captivity can expand their primal nature to such a degree that the captivity itself turns a hunter into a heart-hardened beast. These beautiful creations are designed for the wild, and no enclosure can serve their predatory desires.

With the series of BIG CAT PICTURES below, I show you the faces of powerful cat machines up close and personal as found in these few Captive Big Cats.

alphagirl~ You are right, the spike-like tongue papillae in cats is designed for capturing food and water, but they are also used as a deep cleaning tool for extracting debris from the skin, and swiping away dirt from hair shafts. Very unusual looking up close. I was amazed the first time I saw those things!

As for the pocket camera you seek, I generally use pro gear, heavy bulky and a big pain in the but to maneuver. However, I asked a friend of mine what she likes for low-light and indoor snapshots; she swears by Kodak products. Make sure you're getting at least 10MP capability. I hope this helps!

I found Your hub on graphology(handwriting)very interesting! Thanks for sharing your thoughts here!

Cheers~

I love and have both an adopted cat and a dog. My cat sits by the sink washes her face and drinks water. She loves water so much she waits by the shower and even lays on the damp rug...Weird! Your pic of a tongue is incredible. I read that the tongue papillae in a cat is deigned to hold food and water...look at the curved spikes.YIKES.

Like you wide variety of topics. You are into photography. I am trying to find a poclet camera, like my old canon SD600 elph. It took amazing photos. I still love it but it is showing its age. Any suggestions. I need a fast shutter speed. So many are slow. I tried a nikon coolpix and hated it. Every pic was bad in doors. I sold it.

Thanks for commenting on my graphology. It is cool and for those who write or are writers, you should look at your strokes and analyze some of it. FUN!

Sally's Trove~ LOL! You make me laugh Sally, thanks! I was actually inside the enclosures with these big cats, during hand feeding and the likes. The Big Cats in the photos each were undergoing medical attention for minor things; like the white tiger had a little eye irritation, the leopard (I was not in the enclosure, as she was pretty pissy most of the time) had a shoulder problem, and other cats were being vaccinated or monitored for probable conditions. So yes, it was very exciting! You feel quite small and edible when looking at a 500 pound cat through a camera lens, knowing full well it could reach out and "touch" you at any moment. BTW-- that Bobcat was actually quite a little darling. Thanks for the great question!

All the photos are just wonderful. I admire your skill and patience. And I'm really curious about the big cat photos. I understand how you would take big cat photos from outside an enclosure, and so you see fencing in the pic, but how did you get the photos where there's no fencing in front of the cat? Especially the one of the hissing bobcat where a human head seems to be only inches away. Are you really CatWoman and not K9keystrokes? ;)

Up and awesome.

Nice close-ups K9, your kitties were very co-operative I see. I have four cats and they are pretty much my only entertainment (well except for Hub Pages) but they do sleep a lot, especially now in the winter months. They really like their established routines too. I could set my clock by the moment they all gather for a special treat at 4 pm every day. Really enjoyed your photo gallery. Thanks for sharing. I loved looking at those cat faces -- each was so expressive! And the tongue pictures were very educational. I have to confess I've often felt a cat's tongue, but never really took a close look. Great hub! Voted up and more.

This is an awesome hub on two levels. I'd love it just for the cat pics alone (have been a feline fancier since a wee lass when the tiger at the Bronx Zoo winked at me!).

But you've made it a true artform AND commercially relevant hub as well. That's impressive.

Two paws with opposable thumbs up!

Hi, K9

Wonderful Hub as always, my friend - but I'm afraid I screamed almost as loud as the cat in the first image! Can't remember whether I told you before or not but I have a major phobia of household type cats. My dogs were sleeping and nearly hit the roof when I saw that image! (OK, I'm exaggerating - slightly! ;) )

It's crazy (I know) but bigger cats don't bother me. You're photos are superb and you are certainly on a major Hubbing roll! :)

Hey K9, it's interesting to see you doing a hub on Cats? LOL! However, you put together some great photographs of cats and the information on them was well presented. But, I want to add a little side note, if you don't mind. I was on a site one day learning about cats, because I have two in my home(my mother's cats, one male and one female tabby). I found out that if you watch a cat drink it's water it looks like they are actually defying physics and gravity, but what isn't noticed because it's so quick is that a cat in order to drink must curl it's tongue. Their tongue's movement, hooking, is so quick that the human eye will not pick up on it. LOL! Thank you for sharing. Btw- Awesome photos of the larger cats(tigers). :)
