Germaphobes You Screwed it up for the rest of us!
77Germaphobes, Mysophobia, Bacillophobia, those who have a Pathological Fear of Germs, have really screwed it up for the rest of us! "Is there such a thing as being too clean?" remains the constant question on these people's minds. Living life with this condition, being so afraid of germs, can really stunt a persons quality of life. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) often comes to mind when we witness germ fearing people undergo great effort to avoid the tiny microbes that lurk on every surface, handle, and human palm throughout their day. Well this fear has really screwed it up for the rest of us these days! And here's why;
A Top Nutrition Specialist Teaches Us How to Make and Keep our Kids Immunities Strong!
Expert nutrition specialist and author LUCY BURNEY, as with her previous three books, dives into teaching parents about the importance of children's diets. She gives parents another reason why they must make certain their kids eat well. She explains what can be done to build strong defences that help children fight off infections and bugs. Every parent will want to read all four of her books!
TEST YOUR GERM KNOW-HOW
The American Germaphobia - Mexican Connection
I will preface this with saying I am not suggesting anyone take their child to the dog dish and have him lick the muddy mess, but rather look at the concept in rational form and stop going crazy with antibacterial everything!
Mexico has a tarnished reputation so prevailing that we Americans often feel Mexican license plates should read, "Don't drink the water." The reality is this, the American immune system is not familiar with some of the germs found in the water Mexico provides. The population of Mexican citizens does not suffer the throws of "Montezuma's revenge" as do the tourists. This is because Mexican immune systems have developed while drinking the water that contains the residing bacteria, thus their immunity to such germs is quite strong. The more a human body encounters germs at a young age, the better the body will become at fighting them off. So, Germaphobes, stop "antibacterializing" your kids hands fifty times a day and you won't have nearly as much to be fearful of when it comes to your child's immune system!
GERMAPHOBIA
Germaphobes can Actually Ruine a Child's Developing Immune System!
If you believe that you are doing your kid any favors by being overly protective of the germ-to-kid ratio, you might just be mistaken. Bacteria (germs) actually play a vital role in proper immune system development. It's like building your childs muscles and bone strength through exercise, only to build strong immune systems your child requires a few battles to create resistance to infections. Don't run from cat dander, pollen, or dust either; if their body doesn't recognize them, it won't know how to put up a winning strategic battle when invaded. (This concept totally excludes any people who suffer an illnesses that disables or prevents immune sytem development. Always check with your doctor before changing or starting any new developmental tactics with you or your children)

GERMAPHOBIA
Super-Resistant Bad Bacteria -or- A Germaphobia Nightmare!
It seems that over the past 15 years or so, the excessive use of anti-bacterial soaps has promoted the creation and development of SUPER-BAD-BACTERIA. This type of cleanser kills the bad bacteria all right, but it also kills the good bacteria we need to keep our immunities strong. We require the good bacteria for healthy digestion and for fighting germs. These good germs help to create vitamins that primarily protect our body's largest organ, the skin.
Now don't throw out all of your anti-bacterial soaps, gels, and wipes, right away. You will need these agents when a friend or someone at work comes down with a flesh-eating disease; or when that pandemic prediction come true.
You can do one simple thing that will significantly help reduce the possibility of coming in contact with an undesirable germ of the bad kind (this justifies every reason people become germaphobic); avoid using the same towel to dry your hands over and over. An over-used towel is the biggest bacteria trap on earth! Oh, and by the way, seriously don't drink Mexico's water!

Love this article. At my last job, people were germ-crazy. We had to wipe down all public used items (fax, copier, etc) with bacterial wipes everyday. I'm glad you brought up the point that killing off too much bacteria is actually a bad thing. People seem to forget this in their clean quest.
This hub is right on the mark. People who are so afraid of the smallest germ have made them more resilient, unfortunately for the rest of us. I tend to let my kids get dirty, and stay sick if it's just a cold. Let their immune system get strong, I say.
Namaste.
Wonderful Hub, so many people could use the information in this hub to make their lives healthier. Thank you for sharing this info.
Now I've done it, sorry K9 - I always have been kind of a germ freak, not that I am on medication or anything, (maybe I should be) but I have been known to be a bit cleaning compulsive so I must admit it is all my fault!
BTW, I have heard this before, creating the super germ, sorry folks, I probably had a hand in this! :-(
This is a great, informative hub and we have strengthened bacteria by using some products and certainly by overusing antibiotics. Up and Awesome.

Excellent hub and so true. I have always had to shake my head at people who use hand sanitizer constantly. I go to school with a gal who soaks her hands in it and then breathes it every time she walks into a computer lab - guess who is the first one to always be sick? I believe in good hygiene and a clean home of course, but the "super germs" created by this silliness scare me far worse than any regular germs I might encounter.
We don't clean with anti-bacterial soaps - we use vinegar and other natural cleaners and our family is rarely sick and if so not for very long. Great hub - I wish more people were aware of this info :)
