SEO, Keywords & Marketing | Summary 60 Day Hub Challenge

I have come up for air again and am ready to write the summary regarding the 60 Day Challenge on Hub Pages. After writing the 30 hubs required for the 60dc2 project, as a group, the team puts down a summary in cyber-ink, of their own hubs, creating a personal 'hub' (of sorts) for the work presented.

The 60 Day Challenge was truly just that, a rather big challenge for the first 30 days. I must say that I have learned a superior amount of information during the effort. It was also pleasing to watch as my hub views went up and my stories got shared. Getting all of the articles written was just the first phase of the challenge. Now the team storms ahead to the promotional stage where the many newly created hubs will be marketed in a team movement. I have much to learn in this phase!

As a 60 Day Challenge team member, I understand that my technical savvy verges on the edge of zero; however with help of the team I am finding a slow but positive grasp of the subject. Contending with "SEO", "keywords", "placement of keywords", "optimizing", "marketing" and not to mention the writing, has been quite an event for me personally. One I am happy to have taken-on and one I recommend to any Hubber willing to dedicate themselves to a better hub experience. A far too recent August took the love of my life to reside in a painless joyous place we humans refer to as heaven. The sadness, overwhelming and desperate, leeched from my heart all of the will I may have once had. Nothing was clear, unblemished or tasteful as it had once been. My dear friend's Sue and Chrissy who were (among many) that remained by side to see me through this time, had a female Golden Retriever who was a month away from whelping. Even as it was soon after cancer took my love, they knew I needed something to nurture. What they may not have known was that that something would nurture me in return.

July 30Th, I get the call:

"Gracie is having her babies, and she's on my new white designer bedspread!" Sue had been resting while Gracie, her sweet and whelping Golden was snuggled up to her side quietly enduring the waves of birth. "There is blood everywhere!" Sue continues, "she already has three puppy's!"

The Sense and Scents of The Dog

Dogs seem to have good sense when it comes to using the scents they posses. Let us consider the dogs nose to begin with. If we could take the inner surface (the cells) of a dogs nose, unfurl it making the measurable area flat, these scent cells would be as long and as wide as the entire exterior of the dog they reside upon. They perceive the world so differently than do we humans, using these scent cells to tell them most everything they need to know the instant the dog meets another dog. Wouldn't this be a great attribute for humans to have, although it may create for some very uncomfortable social greetings.

While humans use a pen or keyboard to share their biography, dogs use urine to write theirs. By leaving a memoir of themselves on a tree trunk, they are explaining many things about who they are. The dog's urine will have a different smell and can tell another dog the ins-and-outs of the authors health, age; whether it is a boy or a girl, or a girl in heat; and to some degree the emotional state of the dog who left the message. My advice is to never underestimate the information that your dog may be acquiring while walking along a popular dog path and sniffing in the current events, news, gossip, and possibly the great dog literature of our time.

Previous to WWI, the pit bull terrier was the symbol we Americans imagined when we thought of independent strength and security. The image of the pit bull was used on posters depicting 'Neutrality Without Fear." And Nipper, the RCA corporate logo dog, (as well as a pit bull) was shown listening to phonographic recordings.

Humans reviewed the pit bull, referring to them as clowns who brought humor to the room. "Li'l Rascals" had Petey, a pit bull as a co-star in their comedy movie productions. The good and sweet people owned this loyal family beast; Helen Keller, Fred Astaire, James Thurber and John Steinbeck, all owned pit bulls. Once in while a roust would occur around a pit bull as when Pete, Theodore Roosevelt's pit bull, tore the britches off of the French ambassador during a social event at the White House. No permanent damage occurred and everyone (including the ambassador) took the incident in good stride.

All Dogs Descended from the Same Mold?

When we take a look at the Chihuahua next to a Great Dane, it would seem that the two were unrelated all together. Yet, discovered within canine ancestry we find that it is a fact that these two opposing sights come from the same original mold. The single species that is presumed to have brought us each of the modern breeds of dogs, is a creature that was active primarily in Northern Europe over ten thousand years ago. This won't rule out the possibility that at the same time in history a nomadic relative of the same species was evolving as well.

We can see by simply looking at them that these modern domestic dogs are quite different from breed to breed. What may not be so apparent is what E. Dahr found in 1937; the ratio of snout length to the width of the upper jaw at its narrowest point was, on average, consistent in all dogs and that this was the same for measured ratios in stone age dogs. He went further in his assessments by measuring the length of the row of molar teeth to the hieght of the lower jaw and found similar results. This study would indicate that when dogs were first being domesticated their skulls were all of a similar dimension, making clear that they all evolved from the same type. This statement is supported as well due to the fact that all breeds of domestic dogs have brain cases of about the same size. So, in the situation with our Chihuahua and Great Dane, the difference is purely in size and shape, which is totally man made.

What's a Nice Dog Like You Doin' in a Fight Like This?

The domestic dog lives his mundane life laying about while waiting for his human to provide food and nurture. But seething below the surface is a predator at heart. We must not forget that this beast is descendant of the great ancient wolf after all.

So deeply mapped into his being is his wolf ancestry and with it comes his predatory nature. This instinct reminds him each day that if he gets injured, he cannot hunt. If he cannot hunt he does not eat. If he does not eat, he will die. Stepping through his days this truth drives him forward while loudly reminding him that the fewer injuries he encounters during dog on dog aggression, the more likely he is to stay healthy and injury free, thus able to hunt. When left up to the dogs, very rarely does the most horrific-looking dog fight result in anything more than a few scrapes and scratches. We humans then ask ourselves, why do dogs cause fights at all?

A Dogs Perspective

I believe our dogs are each descended from the wolf, this hunting ancestry is deeply written into his brain. With this in mind, we can understand how his instincts and senses are geared for the hunt. As we take our pets on off-lead adventures they may refuse to come to us when called; our comprehension of this canine behavior may be misunderstood as defiance or disobedience. But if we look at from a dog perspective, he receives the rich scent of something new and it grabs his attention, our goal is to return him to control and the limited freedom of the leash. His brain is confused because he needs to find out from where this smell is coming. You are part of the pack and he does not understand why you aren't as excited as he is about the possibility of a successful hunt. He is driven to continue the hunt, while you are driven to gain control, condemning his actions as disobedience.

Of course your dog is smart, sharp and full of high energy. So why won't he stay connected and obey the rules? if we change our strategy from overcoming and denying your dog's natural hunting instincts to a style that uses these ancient drives, utilizing the natural actions of our canine to work in our favor, we might find that the control and enjoyment increases vastly improving our relationship with our K9 companions.

When asking the question why do dogs bark? You must then ask why do people talk? I'll use some anthropomorphic comparisons to help you understand the reasons our dogs bark. I have a friend who seems to think dogs bark just to annoy us, I really don't believe this is true, I can't imagine a dog being this disrespectful. My belief when it comes to dogs barking is compared to human speech. Humans speak, and so do dogs. The two have more in common than you would think. Humans talk to express emotions, dogs bark to express emotions. Human talk to communicate with each other, dogs bark tocommunicate with each other. Humans talk to dogs to tell them something, dogs bark at humansto them something. We can watch our dogs playing and barking at another dog, what they may be conveying is unknown to us, but when they turn their vocal interactions to humans, we must learn to determine what our K9 companion has to say.

Hard Cooked, Not Boiled!

When we think about the inevitable edible egg, scrambled, over easy, Benedict and baked, nothing seems to be more versatile than the egg when it has been hard-cooked. Yes. I said hard cooked. It is never hard-boiled! (well, it is if you are referring to some cheesy detective in some cheesy film). NEVER ACTUALLY BOIL AN EGG, unless your goal is to make rubbery whites with garish green yolks.

Why all of the fuss? The fuss is chemistry; the chemistry of the protein rich, low calorie, and very low (1.5 grams) saturated fat egg. It is a true miracle, the cooking of an egg, and here is why. The longer and more vigorously you cook the protein of an egg, the tighter this protein binds together, causing more water to be squeezed out. I would rather make toast from bread than create eggs as dry as toast. Also, unless your goal is making green eggs (and ham) then turn down the veracity of boiling your eggs. The drab-green chalky yolk results from hideously high heat being applied to your eggs. The iron in the yolk combines with the sulfur in the white of the egg causing the creation of iron sulfide. The longer you boil your eggs, the greater the chance of this disaster occurring. Be gentle with your eggs is the point here.

My 50Th Hub is My First 60dc2 Hub!

So, I see this 60 day hub challenge and read that this is the second go-round of the event. Making my 50Th hub my first 60 day challenge hub seems only appropriate! I've only been writing on hub pages for 3 months and have loads to learn. I came to HP to 'spill write' primarily. I had lost my spouse to cancer and couldn't find the passion to return to my previously (and quite successful) business career. I ran across HubPages.com as I was looking for something to do with and inspire my life; and possibly give birth to a new passion. So, it was the pen (or tapping keys rather) that drew me to this wonderful place. At first a respite, that has now grown into a desire and a feeling that I may be okay here if I can generate a few more shekels and drive traffic to where I share. What are the important things?

Since writing on HubPages, I have found two things to be undeniably true; if I write with passion, an article does far better statistically, and if I am writing because I just want to get an article out, I know it won't do as well.

WRITING WITH PASSION

I go head-over-heals when it comes to big dumb dogs, or any dog for that matter. I could spend my days happily hanging around, playing and snuggling with these wolf like beasts. So when I put pen to pad on a dog related article, I find my brain and hands to become very in-tune with each other. The ease with which the words and information rush to the forefront of my mind is amazing, information begins lining up waiting its turn to run down my arm and activate the tactile motions of my hands making dog related words appear on my computer screen, and it feels good, it feels smooth and it feels right.
