Serious Oven-Cleaning with Essential Green Formula
71Caustic Oven Cleaners No More!
Oven-Cleaning With Green Herbal Formula
It really goes without saying but, chemical oven cleaner has to be one of the most unpleasant tools for keeping the home clean. The smell alone would discourage the best housekeeper from maintaining a pristine oven interior. Then when you consider the caustic, burning and acidic dangers, one might take to Grilling all year 'round, rain, sleet, and snow be damned!
The Essential Green Formula for Oven-Cleaning you are about to discover has become one of my treasured weapons in my Green Clean Kitchen Arsenal. Even as no cleaning formula is perfect (including those easy-on-and-off caustic renditions) this is as close to perfect I have found in the world of Seriously Green Oven-Cleaning.

I once placed two very full pumpkin pie tins in the oven only to witness the filling flow right over the pie pan edges and onto my clean oven floor. I could do nothing but wait until the baking was completed and the then black sugary burnt filling lay stuck tightly to the racks and oven interior. It was a horrible mess! This green formula worked wonders on this kitchen disaster and will also work great on any of those really neglected ovens. If you have a few VERY bad areas, add more salt to the formula and employ the use of a fine steel wool.
What's in my Green Oven Cleaner?
- ½ cup of salt
- ½ cup of Borax or Washing Soda
- 16 oz. Baking Soda
- ¼ cup Water
- ¾ White Vinegar
- 12 Drops Thyme Essential Oil
- 12 Drops Lemon or Lemongrass Essential Oil
Instructions:
- Combine the salt, washing soda, baking soda in a medium glass bowl, add just enough water to make it a paste-like consistency.
- Take out all of the oven racks, and set the oven to 250°F for 20 minutes, and then turn the oven off, leaving the door open.
- Carefully and evenly spread the paste (using a sponge or cloth) on all surfaces of the interior oven. Allow the paste to set for 30 - 45 minutes.
- Combine the essential oils and vinegar in a clean spray bottle and shake the heck out of it to blend. Spray down the interior surfaces and wipe clean. Be sure to rinse well with a damp sponge.

Green Cleaning Oven Racks and Accessories
While you are cleaning the oven interior surfaces, it's a good idea to get the racks and all of the oven—and stove— accessories soaking in a green cleaning solution. This is the perfect time to clean all of those chrome rings, gas burner grills, and knobs from the stove top as well! These items gather a ton of grease and grime over time and are easy to neglect while living a busy lifestyle.
Accessories Soaking Solution Ingredients:
- 1 cup baking soda
- ½ cup vinegar
- 5 to 8 drops of the essential oil of your choosing
Use an old toothbrush or fine steel wool for those nooks-and-crannies and tiny places where dirt tends to hide away. I find that a double-sided sponge offers dual usefulness and a far less abrasive approach to the "easy to scratch" surfaces.
Instructions:
- Combine ingredients in a large tub, bucket or sink. Mix together.
- Place the oven racks and accessories into the solution.
- Allow to soak the entire time you are cleaning the oven interior.
- Use old toothbrush or fine steel wool to clean grime and grease. Rinse well and return items to oven and stove top accordingly.

Amazing! I am bookmarking this one and getting that recipe copied so I can magically clean that oven!
I'll have to try this.
Borax has been around and in use for ages. I wonder how many of us know what it is:
borax (?bôraks)
noun
a white mineral in some alkaline salt deposits, used in making glass and ceramics, as a metallurgical flux, and as an antiseptic. • A hydrated sodium borate; chem. formula: Na 2 B 4 O 7 (OH) 4.8H 2 O.
Great advice, K9KS! I like the idea of warming up the oven first a little bit, and then applying the liquid/paste cleaner so that it can work itself in. I definitely love the fact that the method and formula can be used to avoid the toxic and caustic fumes that most heavily alkaline spray oven cleaners use, when they're clearly not a necessary part of cleaning a dirty oven effectively. We'll give this a shot after Thanksgiving, when there will be plenty of baked-in spills to clean up!
Thank you, HubHugs and Shalom, my friend!
This is a great oven cleaning solution! We will definitely use it after all of the Thanksgiving cooking. Paul cooks quite a few pies for the day and there is always some spilling over. Thanks for the tips! ;)
This is very good. I too am bookmarking it. My oven is well overdue for a clean and I have all these ingredients bar the essential oils. Maybe I have lavender hiding away somewhere. Thanks for sharing.
Hey K9...wow...bookmarked (can't wait to try it) voted up, useful & awesome...would this work as a degreaser as well? or is it too abrasive for the top of the stove & hood fan? Thanks for the great hub! Very useful for all of us Green People...
Thanks for the great recipes! I have always been weary of using chemical oven cleaners would love to use a more natural option.
Wow, I've bookmarked this one! It'll really come in handy as I do more baking, for, indeed, pie season is at hand, and as you've pointed out, they can get a bit... unruly. I've never prepared a cleaning solution recipe before. This'll be fun!
Hi, I hate the smell of oven cleaners, in fact they leave me with an allergic reaction, and I can't breath! never knew this until a few years ago when I was spraying it madly around my oven, I had to throw all the windows open and take a great big gulp of air! so this is great, I am going to bookmark it for future reference, thanks nell
Great hub! I am bookmarking this one because my oven definitely needs cleaning. I am trying to go green and this is another way to do it. Thanks so much!
What a valuable piece of advice, K9. I agree - oven cleaners are just horrid. I minimize my oven use and keep foil in the bottom but even so, things can get messy. The green -- and homemade, too (yea!) -- cleaner sounds really great! Thank you! I even have some Borax on hand I no longer use in laundry.

Cool, I'm going to try the soaking recipe ASAP on several items (especially the knobs!) off my stove which are just gross.
